A Very UnSerious Reader, Indeed I feel like this phrase serious reader has been thrown around a lot lately. Of course, we all know Jonathan Franzen wants us to understand that serious readers should only want paper books (and especially his paper books), which seemed to kick the term serious reader into high gear. We employ the phrase serious reader here at BookRiot pretty often, I guess to distinguish from silly readers. (Jeff once used the phrase twice in the first sentence of a post.) It seems to be a phrase designed to create community around people who like a certain kind of book and treat reading in a certain kind of way: people who take reading seriously, I suppose. The phrase serious reader gives me hives. But maybe thats because Ive been hearing that phrase a lot for most of my scholarly life. It usually precedes a dismissal of something people like. Im a serious reader, so I dont typically read comic books / romance / sci-fi / YA / bestsellers. Those people really do italic that shit with their voices, too. Theyd fake a British accent if they thought they could get away with it. In that context, the term serious reader drips with disdain. Serious readers also dont own television sets but have to tell you all the time about how they dont own television sets; they seem to sit around waiting for a TV show to come up in conversation just so they can announce they havent heard of it. Serious readers call movies cinema and refuse to see anything shown in a commercial movie house. Serious readers loathe musical theatre and think the eight hour production of Gatz on stage in London right now leaves too much of the good stuff out. Serious readers think youre an idiot. Im supposed to be a serious reader; I have been trained to be one. I went to school for an absurd number of years and spent most of them being paid to read. From September 2007 to August 2008, my only job was to read 300 books. All of them very weighty, serious, grown-up, literary books. Or theories about such books. Then I spent the subsequent two years writing about books, at the end of which I stood in a little room and pontificated about books to other people who took books very, very seriously indeed. Then I took a job teaching other people to read and write about books. (BTW, I am dr b on Book Riot mostly because there was already another Brenna here, which, PS, kind of blew my mind, and because this nickname was bestowed upon me by a student and I find it delightful.) Its a pretty privileged existence, man. And somewhere in that process, I grew suspicious of serious readers. It started off early in grad school, when I was too new and young and idealistic to know I was supposed to lie to people. In breaks between classes, someone would ask what people were reading for fun, and I would launch into an excited discussion of Marvels Runaways series or the Civil War storyline. And then the serious readers at the table would stare at me, blink very slowly, and explain that their light reading this week was some of Foucaults early essays. And I would stare back at them, very confused as to what fun and Foucault had in common beyond phonetics, and feel like an idiot. I realized along the way that to be a serious reader in the way those people are serious readers, you have to fundamentally believe that some books are more worthy. You have to believe that the concept of a universal canon is worthwhile (Im much more interested in individual, personal canons). You have to believe art needs gatekeepers. And thats fine, if you do. More power to you! But I dont. And realizing that was the nexus of why I couldnt hang with the serious reader set. It also helped me realize that, as a newly-minted UnSerious Reader, my real interest is in story and community. To wit: I want to read whatever is super popular so that I can talk to people about it. Im not super interested in reading something no one else has read because I wont be able to talk about it. Unless I super super love it and I can talk other people into reading it immediately after. The best part about teaching is making people read stuff so we can talk about it together. Im much less interested than I feel like I should be, professionally, in what is good and bad literature. I dont care what shape my story comes in. It can be an ebook or a dusty tome or a tattered paperback or an unsolicited PDF. It can be a fantasy or a romance or a YA novel or a graphic text. It can be fiction or non-fiction or somewhere-in-between-fiction. If the story is good, I will engage. For that matter, it can be a TV show, a movie, a comic book, or a video game and I will engage that, too. If you want to sell me on a book, tell me what it meant to you, how it shaped you, and why the story grabbed you. Talk to me of cultural impact. Tell me how you were gripped for hours, days. Dont tell me its important unless you can tell me why in real terms. Dont tell me I should read something, unless you follow it immediately with BECAUSE YOULL LOVE IT!! This, I think, is my philosophy of reading. Which is why I was so surprised and confused last week when, in the comments of my silly 50 Shades of Grey flowchart, a commenter wrote that she felt my post was a dig at people that dont read the right books. Heres my deep, dark, terrible, doctorate-revocation-inducing confession: I dont think there are right books. Or wrong books. I just think there are books. And I feel really, really lucky that my work and non-work time is wholly devoted to exploring books even if I do it as an UnSerious Reader, indeed.

Rap lyrics could easily be misinterpreted as you can see. Everyone and anyone has caught themselves writing a quick rap and putting : shooting, busting, beating, smoking, and drinking. What they need to do in New Jersey is put a self defense law in effect instead of wanting to listen to rap music for potential murderers. The judicial system really needs to reevaluate their priorities, this is really ridiculous, I really do not agree with this nonsense.

Keep these points in mind when you truncate words and phrases: 1. a/an This entry refers not to a or an as abbreviations but to which of the two indefinite articles should precede a given abbreviation. The choice depends not on the first letter of the abbreviation itself but on the sound of the first letter. Therefore, for example, youââ¬â¢d write ââ¬Å"an MD after her name,â⬠rather than ââ¬Å"a MD after her name,â⬠because the first letter in that abbreviation is pronounced ââ¬Å"emâ⬠and should therefore be preceded by an. 2. Initials as Adjectives ââ¬Å"I went up to the ATM machine and put in my PIN number to check my IRA account.â⬠And in relating this event, I made three errors. Strategies for Acing a Multiple Choice Test We all have to study and take a multiple choice test at some point in our lives. Since these tests are so prevalent, its important to have a few strategies under our belts when we sit for the exams. Read below, because these multiple choice test tips are sure to help you get the score you need on whatever exam youre taking next. Multiple Choice Strategies Read the question while covering up the answer choices. Come up with an answer in your head, and then check to see if itââ¬â¢s one of the choices listed. Use a process of elimination to get rid of as many wrong choices as you can before answering a question. Wrong answers are often easier to find. Look for extremes like never only or ââ¬Å"always. Look for opposites like a substitution of ââ¬â1 for 1. Look for similarities like conjunctive for subjunctive. Those could be distractors.Physically cross off wrong answer choices so you are not tempted to go back at the end of the test and change your answer. Why? You will read more about trusting your gut in a minute.Read ALL the choices. The right answer may be the one you keep skipping. Many students, in an attempt to move quickly through the test, tend to skim answer choices instead of reading them thoroughly. Do not make that mistake!Cross off any answer that does not fit grammatically with the question on your multiple choice test. The purpose of this experiment is to explore the hardness of the water on campus. Hard water has been a problem for hundreds of years. One of the earliest references to the hardness or softness of water is in Hippocrates discourse on water quality in Fifth century B.C. Hard water causes many problems in both in the household and in the industrial world. One of the largest problems with hard water is that it tends to leave a residue when it evaporates. Aside from being aesthetically unpleasing to look at, the build up of hard water residue can result in the clogging of valves, drains and piping. This build up is merely the accumulation of the minerals dissolved in natural water and is commonly called scale. Other than clogging plumbing, the build up of scale poses a large problem in the industrial world. Many things that are heated are often cooled by water running thru piping. The build up of scale in these pipes can greatly reduce the amount of heat the cooling unit can draw away from the source it is trying to heat. This poses a potentially dangerous situation. The build up of excess heat can do a lot of damage; boilers can explode, containers can melt etc. On the flip side of the coin, a build up of scale on an object being heated, a kettle for example, can greatly reduce the heat efficiency of the kettle. Because of this, it takes much more energy to heat the kettle to the necessary temperature. In the industrial world, this could amount to large sums of money being thrown into wasted heat. In addition to clogging plumbing and reducing heating efficiency, the build up of hard water also adversely affects the efficiency of many soaps and cleansers. The reason for this is because hard water contains many divalent or sometimes even polyvalent ions. These ions react with the soap and although they do not form precipitates, they prevent the soap from doing it's job. When the polyvalent ions react with the soap, they form an insoluble soap scum. This is once again quite unpleasing to look at and stains many surfaces. The sole reason for all these problems arising from hard water is because hard water tends to have higher than normal concentrations of these minerals, and hence it leaves a considerable amount more residue than normal water. The concentration of these minerals is what is known as the water's Total Dissolved Solids or TDS for short. This is merely a way of expressing how many particles are dissolved in water. How Diversity Relates to Education Essay
In the general education system, it is very important that there is a wide array of diverse groups in the classroom. ââ¬Å"It is important to have a diverse student body, not only to create a realistic setting but also to encourage people to grow outside their boundaries and learn something new about a culture they may not be familiar with. (Pendulum 1) I believe diversity is an important part of the educational system. It is something positive, and not something one should fear. I also believe that diversity I crucial to a growing child. In this essay, I will address how diversity relates to education in general and how it relates to me as a future teacher. Diversity and education in America is an important topic in todayââ¬â¢s education system. Inclusion is a key factor in the classroom; it helps bring diversity in to the lives of many children all over the world. By having diversity in the classroom students can learn about peoples differences that make them special and unique. Through my time in taking this diversity class I have come to realize how important it is to teach children that everyone is different and special in their own way. As the student population in American schools becomes increasingly diverse, educators must respond with school reform efforts that meet the needs of all students. In order to do so, teachers need to be prepared to take on the diverse student population. Going through the school of education and this diversity class, I am able to understand now that teachers must develop a culturally sensitive curriculum that integrates multicultural viewpoints and histories, to apply instructional strategies that encourage all students to achieve, and review school and district policies related to educational equity. From my educational background so far I know that teachers must become adept at choosing printed, electronic, and audiovisual materials, and in selecting topics and assignments that value the wide variety of perspectives and interests that exist among the students in any given classroom. The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect, it means understanding each student in the classroom is unique and recognizing their individual differences. ââ¬Å"Children exposed to diverse cultures in the classroom learn to understand different points of view, which is an important part of educationâ⬠(Canadian Teachers 1). Children learn to celebrate differences and learn how to work together to be successful. If teachers are accepting of students differences they will be able to look at students for their potential instead of with a bias in mind, and this will help them teach more successfully. As a future teacher, I think it is important to create a tolerant, accepting and caring classroom atmosphere and here are a couple things one can do as a teacher to incorporate diversity in the classroom. By discussing diversity, and why it is a positive thing, creating lesson plans that discuss the cultures of my students and cultures of the community I teach in, by discussing religious beliefs of the community, and by speaking to students about disabilities and at risk students will help children in my class realize that these differences do not make someone less than them. I would also teach students about socioeconomic issues and how they affect students, and will teach the differences in gender and about gender stereotypes. I will teach these stereotypes but allow both boys and girls in my classroom the same equal opportunities. I believe discussing these issues to todayââ¬â¢s youth will help show students that all people have needs, and I would emphasize that it is important for students to accept and help each other in order to benefit themselves and the world around them. I think that by teaching lessons that incorporate diversity students can identify and overcome biases, and as a teacher I will also learn about my biases from the students in my care. As a teacher it is important to make sure the classroom atmosphere is comfortable in order to ensure productivity. Teaching students that differences are a good thing and those differences can be learned from and valued is a way to help ensure a positive classroom environment. As a teacher I will help my students understand biases, and I will help them be able to accept differences and treat people fairly by educating them about the differences of the people around them. I believe there are many ways a teacher can incorporate diversity lessons into the classroom. Overall, I believe that teaching students to respect each other despite their differences will benefit the students, the teachers, and the rest of the world. Diversity is an important topic today because everyone is different and unique; as a teacher I understand that I will never be in a school that is not a diverse teaching environment. I think that by taking this diversity class, it has helped me to realize and understand the importance diversity in the classroom and the community has to offer.

The defense contested the validity of the search, claiming that the search of the stereo equipment was unwarranted based on its appearance alone and violated the defendantââ¬â¢s Fourth Amendment rights. The defendant is found guilty of the initial charges, but all evidence relating to the robbery charges is ruled fruit of an unlawful search by the state trial court and the Arizona Court of Appeals. When the Arizona Supreme Court denied review, the United States Supreme Court accepted the Stateââ¬â¢s request for a hearing. The Supreme Court first ruled that the warrantless entry by the officers, under the exigent circumstances exception to the warrant requirement, was valid. The court then ruled that the recording of the equipmentââ¬â¢s serial numbers did not constitute a search or seizure. However, when the officer moved the turntable it was held to be a separate search, apart from the search for the defendant and his firearms. It was the courtââ¬â¢s ruling that the officer did not have probable cause, only reasonable suspicion to search the stereo equipment. The evidence seized after the discovery of the turntables constituted unlawful search. The lower courtââ¬â¢s decision was affirmed. How to Start Your Academic Paper with an Incredible Hook
The first essay in the life of our imaginary friend Jake was dedicated to environmental problems and he started it with the following phrases: Nowadays, everybody should care about the preservation of nature. It is very important for all of us or the planet will be in troubleâ⬠The teacher praised him, but when he matriculated to the university he understood: this is a great example of a very poor start after which the reader will get bored in the first moment. People donââ¬â¢t like when they receive the obvious information as well as they hate the binding collocation ââ¬Å"everybody shouldâ⬠they need something more catchy and enticing. And this is not only one way to make them sleep. Thatââ¬â¢s why you need some attention grabber which will hold them until the end of the paper. Not only advertising but any article, review or an academic essay becomes better if it has a hook. Sometimes we start to read some texts to see what comes next even without the interest to the covered topic. The other we close after 1 minute of reading. The reason is that in the first kind of essays the experienced writers skillfully set traps for us. You are able to do the same by: 1. Stating a Staggering Fact or Entertaining Statistics Numbers are work good in any text as well as little-known facts do. Statistics also can make the essay more convincing especially when you reinforce them by mentioning the source. Here and later I will provide examples for better understanding. Letââ¬â¢s get back to the topic of my first essay ââ¬â the environment. Providing Some Quotation from the Book or the Famous Person Utterance A great citation at the beginning sets the tone of the composition and makes the reader reflect on the problem. But be careful with quotes. It is better not to choose very popular or overused phrases. They will not arouse the person interest or even cause the irritation. We are all crew.â⬠Marshall McLuhan 3. Asking the Provocative Question Questions are good because the people got used responding to them unconsciously and it involves them in reading. Before asking the question you should be sure if it is intriguing enough not only to your mind but to every potential reader. The series of queries also will be efficient especially if you want to promote your idea and make the person agree with you in the end. It is proved that after 3 yes the reader will say it the fourth time without any difficulties. Few examples: ââ¬Å"Isnââ¬â¢t it too late to save the Earth?â⬠ââ¬Å"Have you ever imagined what could happen with your city if every citizen threw the trash into the bins?â⬠4. Telling the Story or Sharing Own Experience Most people are prone to stories and read them eagerly. Especially it works when they see a lesson to be learned in the narrative. So, a little story expressed in the simple words can become your secret weapon to grab all the readerââ¬â¢s attention. Itââ¬â¢s also great to dilute an academic paper with the easy-to-read inserts to let the reader have some rest between the heaps of scientific terms while you are writing the paper on the topic difficult to understand. You can also open a dialogue with the audience by telling some actuality from your life. Despite its a great way to create a truly engaging hook, it is better not to be used if the university forbids students to apply personal and possessive pronouns like I, you, mine in the papers. You still can share your experience but by avoiding those words at the same time. If you were attentive, you could notice that the article contains an example to this point at start. 5. Challenging Yourself with an Improbable Statement Start off with the misconception or with wrong opinion and the reader is already on your hook. People will have a stake in the continuation because they will simply wonder why you began the essay with a mistake. Also, you can challenge yourself and provide them with the opposite point of view first. This kind of statement takes a place of your imaginary opponent with whom you are going to argue and prove the trueness of your opinion. It may seem that such a move would only weaken the essay: the reader will not believe the author and agree with someone elses opinion. Thatââ¬â¢s why choose the opponent you could handle. Here the examples are: ââ¬Å"Some people admit that we shouldnââ¬â¢t think about the future of our planet. Who cares if we live here and now?â⬠ââ¬Å"Genetically modified foods are awfully harmful to our bodies. But actually, this fact has long since been disproved by the scientists.â⬠Find more hooks on the following picture: It is not necessary to use those hooks in the paper: you can discover the own way to draw the reader into your web. There are different types of essays to write so consider which one could be the most appropriate. Even if your hook is killing, donââ¬â¢t ruin the whole essay by giving poor arguments or providing the superficial analysis of the data. Write also an outline for the research paper and get prepared well for the tough but interesting job. Apply enough pressure and you will compose the decent essay of which you will be not ashamed even after a while.
